With the DustSensor, we have launched a new expansion sensor for our SmartMetering area. The small sensor, measuring only 79×44 mm, optically measures deposit dust on a surface. As with other Kentix expansion sensors, it is connected via the Plug’n’Play RJ45 connector via the Kentix system socket. The detection sensitivity can be adjusted directly on the sensor.
Business-critical infrastructures such as data centres, IT rooms and IT distribution boards form the basis for smooth business operations. The maintenance, servicing and cleaning of these areas is important for error avoidance and value retention. Compliance with guidelines is also an important issue in IT operations. In standards such as ISO 27000 or EN 50600, the maintenance and cleaning of systems is an integral part of successful audits. To meet these requirements, the Kentix DustSensor is an ideal extension for environmental monitoring, which pays for itself quickly, especially due to the low investment.
Development and first use
Together with a logistics company, the DustSensor was developed to detect and report contamination in IT distributors in the logistics area by cardboard dust, tyre abrasion from forklifts and robot vehicles and other sources of contamination. Around 50 IT distributors in the area of a logistics centre are needed there for smooth operation and supply of the infrastructure. Failures of individual distributors would lead to interruption of operations – this had to be avoided under all circumstances. MultiSensors in the individual IT distributors already take care of environmental monitoring such as climate monitoring, unauthorized cabinet opening, power supply and vibration. Together with the dust sensor, which is connected via the system socket of the MultiSensor, effective detection of contamination can be achieved. The advantage for the operator is that he can use the resources for the inspection much more precisely and detect partial contamination more quickly.
