Connecting people is the mission of TeliaSonera. The telecommunications provider with roots in Sweden operates in the areas of landline, mobile communications, broadband services and infrastructure. In order to further optimize its own infrastructure, TeliaSonera relies on holistically networked systems, thereby implementing a 360 ° concept. It consists of ambient monitoring, video surveillance and access control solutions from Kentix, Kaba and Axis. The system warns, e.g. early about fires, leakage or access by unauthorized persons.
Situation – mixed systems
For internal monitoring of the technical locations, TeliaSonera has used many, sometimes complicated individual systems for access control, the burglary and fire detection control panel (EMZ / BMZ) and monitoring. Since the components were not fully IP-enabled, a consistent facility network could not be established. Secondly, the overall operating, rental and connection costs for the communication were too high. In addition, system administrators were lacking detailed information about plant conditions and alarms. Because this provoked too late reactions in case of failures or failures, which ultimately reduced the quality of service. It was also objected that remote management was not possible; in the best case, this was done only by the manufacturer or installer.
In order to fully monitor the containers and rooms, reduce their costs and generally improve their information, service and quality management, TeliaSonera began evaluating the solutions available on the market.
This was done under the task to fulfill three essential points with a new system:
• implementing a consistent IP-capable building and security technology
• to establish a transparent infrastructure as well
• establishing vendor-neutral interfaces.
Furthermore, the responsible attached importance to the possibility of performing remote interventions and services. External services should be reduced to optimize information management. The important thing: The information should be available worldwide.
MultiSensor system collects environmental data
Ultimately, the decision was made on an integrated security solution from the provider’s own products together with solutions from Kentix GmbH, Kaba and Axis Communications. This resulted in an architecture consisting of Kentix environmental monitoring components, Kaba access control systems, and Axis network video solutions. Gradually, a 360-degree environmental monitoring of the entire infrastructure of the repeater stations and data centers of TeliaSonera. The installations cover seven areas each: access control, burglar alarm, fire detection, environmental monitoring, video surveillance, general system integration as well as energy management and PUE (power usage effectiveness). The Kentix-based MultiMonitor solution helps those in control of the environment of their assets at all times. The system includes climate monitoring, antifreeze, fire and leakage monitoring functions. The MultiSensor fuses all important physical sensors in one device and has only the size of a R detector.
It is simply attached to the ceiling of the server room. This sensor and the MultiSensor RACK installed in the racks house intrusion detection, climate monitoring, access control and video surveillance systems. These systems could all be easily integrated into TeliaSonera’s Network Management Center. Two types have been installed: the MultiSensor LAN, which is powered by Power over Ethernet (PoE) and has an integrated web server, and the MultiSensor ZigBee, which works wirelessly and collects the collected data via ZigBee. Send wireless connection to the central monitoring unit. This core component is called AlarmManager-PRO. It receives all information collected by sensors and cameras. The tool also sends alarms via SMS and SNMP to the control center and accurately logs all measured data.
The walls have eyes here
For access control, the Kentix solution has been coupled to the Kaba B-NET system. It is responsible for the door control and access control. It is thus possible for the data center operators to switch the burglar alarm function for certain situations or automatically to arm or disarm. In addition to numeric control, card readers, fingerprint scanners combined with card readers and digital cylinders with integrated card reader are also installed. The outdoor area has IP cameras that record surveillance videos. This records who entered the container. In case of alarm, the video material is used for review and reconstruction. Via a facility network including a portal in the corporate design, all buildings can be called up at the various locations and those responsible can check the status of the existing systems – e. G. “Camera input”, “Climate”, “Router” etc.
The conversion to the new system took place gradually. The first implementation was made in new plants in Spain. As the first complete integration, access control was carried out at around 100 locations with around 2,500 people. So that the change was not unnecessarily delayed, an exchange was also carried out for pending revisions or for defects. Otherwise, the “old” technology initially remained in operation. In part, the technicians networked the system over cellular 3G networks; In general, all locations are networked via the Facility Network (30 – 2,000 sqm). This was followed by a consistent IP expansion of other trades (air conditioning, control and building services). In addition, internal and external service providers (NMC, SPOC) were specially trained to handle the integrated solution.
About TeliaSonera International Carrier
The company is part of the TeliaSonera Group with around 28,000 employees and is an internationally operating provider of telecommunications services headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. TeliaSonera is an Tier 1 network provider providing network infrastructure and services to more than 1000 customers in 80 different countries. In 2013, the company was the second largest carrier worldwide.

Service Management improved
With the help of the new 360 degree concept, TeliaSonera has succeeded in significantly reducing operating costs, mainly due to its low maintenance performance. Furthermore, false alarms could be reduced by around 20 percent, which meant less labor input.
“With the new integrated system, we have created a solid foundation for new organizational measures and better reporting,” comments Rene Sommer, Infrastructure Planner, BTS Infra International TeliaSonera International Carrier Germany GmbH. “The Kentix MultiSensor system is complemented by Kaba and Axis solutions, so we can truly monitor and control our data centers. Thanks to Internet access, this also works via mobile devices. That means our administrators have everything under control even when they are not there. ”
Success and summary
The newly created 360 ° technical infrastructure monitoring concept brought together three compatible solutions from Kentix, Kaba and Axis. With this integrated solution, TeliaSonera International Carrier has holistic monitoring of environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, dew point, voltage, fire and burglary, as well as continuous video surveillance and access management. Thanks to the IP capability of all components, those responsible can now access the different access, alarm, climate, energy and video areas via the uniform facility portal and remotely control them if necessary.
